Archimedes' Echidna (commission)
Date:
Many months ago I was commissioned (again) to make a series of Discord server icons. This is the same client who previously commissioned such gems as Enraptured Athoracophoridae and Erudite Australopithecus, so I knew I was going to be in for something interesting. Just like last time, I was given a list of phrases whose words started with E and A, then asked to illustrate them. I was given minimal direction other than the occasional explanation when I asked what some of the words meant.
Many of the members of the Discord server are from Seattle or its surrounds, and within walking distance to the famous Space Needs is the Pacific Science Center. Inside this museum is an Archimedes’ screw. If you’ve never used one before, it’s a rotatable screw that you stick into some water, and by turning the screw, it moves the water from the bottom to the top.
It has been so long since I’ve been to the Pacific Science Center that Archimedes’ screw is among the few things I actually remember about it. I’d go again if I was in the area, but tickets are like US$30. For that price, you could go into the science museum in Ueno park twice and have lunch at the museum restaurant both times.
Knuckles the Echidna is, of course, an Echidna. Much like Arthur, the only real way to know this is to be told, because no echidna I’ve ever seen is bright red and wears spiky gloves.
Anyway, I think I’ve captured the dreary, overcast Seattle weather pretty well, as well as the excitement felt by every Seattleite living there in Knuckles’ expression.
