Xbox 360 region-free DVD playback with RGH/JTAG
Even with an RGH or JTAG’d Xbox 360, your console will likely be unable to play DVDs from a different region unless its NAND has been patched to allow it. This guide describes how to patch your console’s NAND to play DVDs of any region.
Prerequisites
- You must already have an RGH or JTAG’d Xbox 360, which is a hardware mod.
- You need a way to transfer files to/from the Xbox 360. You can use either:
- A FAT32 formatted USB drive or
- Xbox 360 Neighborhood
Risks
This procedure involves rewriting the console’s NAND, which is required for it to boot. Writing a bad NAND will brick your Xbox 360.
Dumping your NAND
- Extract Simple 360 NAND Flasher and transfer the files to your Xbox 360.
- On the Xbox, run
Default.xexto start Simple 360 NAND Flasher - Press
Xto dump the NAND with rawdump - In the same directory as
Default.xex, you will see a new file calledflashdmp.bin. Transfer this to your PC.
Obtaining your CPU key
- On your PC, extract and run X360 NAND Dump Checker.
- Bad blocks are normal, as long as
"NAND Verified as OK!"appears at the end. If it does not, you may need to redo the steps in Dumping your NAND.
- Bad blocks are normal, as long as
- Press
Check NANDand selectflashdmp.bin. - In the same directory as
flashdmp.bin, you will see a new file calledcpukey.txtcontaining your CPU key.
Creating a region-free NAND
- Extract and run J-Runner with Extras.
- Click
Load Sourceand selectflashdmp.bin. - If the CPU key is not already filled in, paste in the CPU key from
cpukey.txt. - In the top menu, select
Nand → SMC Config Editor. - In the SMC Config Editor, click
Edit Configat the bottom. - Change the
DVD Regiondropdown toFREE. - Click
Save Configand close the config editor. - Verify that the
XeBuildsection in the top right matches for your console. Incorrect values could result in a bad NAND that bricks your console! - Click the
Create XeBuildbutton.
Flashing the region-free NAND
- By default, J-Runner creates a new directory named after your console’s serial number, which will contain
updflash.bin. Copy this to the same directory as Simple 360 Nand Flasher’sDefault.xexon the Xbox. - On the Xbox, run
Default.xexto start Simple 360 NAND Flasher. - Press
Ato flash the NAND with Rawflash. - Wait for the process to finish and for the console to turn off.
- If the console shows a red ring, do not panic. You may simply have to turn the console off and on again.
- You will now be able to play out-of-region DVDs.
